The new released book, Strengths Based Marriage- Build a Stronger Relationship By Understanding Each Other’s Gifts by Jimmy Evans and Allan Kelsey is chalk full of great advice for young and old couples as well as those married for any length of time.
The book is broken up into 4 sections: Introduction to Strengths, Stopping the Cycles of Pain, Speaking Love to Your Spouse’s Heart, and Secrets of Successful Marriages. Each section has multiple chapters- ending with questions to reflect upon.
It encourages each spouse to take the Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder assessment and provides the link to do this if that person can’t recognize his or her own strengths.
The book then focuses on identifying each individuals strengths and in a sense customizing your marriage to fit those strengths. The concept reminds me a lot of the Christian “Love Language” books.
This book is authored by 2 men- I am curious to see how the book would have been written differently if it were authored by Jimmy Evans and his wife Karen instead. To get a woman’s perspective on the issue of marriage also would make an already strong book even stronger. However, it is obvious that Evans and Kelsey spoke to their wives to get input, because the chapter on what woman want out of marriage is seemingly accurate in my opinion.
This book can be a quick read to one who is interested in the topic- but it is the reflection that results from the material learned that is lasting. I would say that this is a great book for a husband or wife to apply for a positive marriage. Applying the concepts together would obviously strengthen the relationship that much more!
